Browning in the Microwave with Corning Ware Browning Dishes

CorningWare Microwave Browning Skillet

Can you really BROWN foods in the microwave?  That is an experiment I’m going to be set out to tackle here very soon.  The chief complaint of many people is that food in the microwave doesn’t get brown, or turns rubbery.

Well I have discovered that browning in the microwave is not that hard if you have the right tools and products for the job.

I didn’t initially set out to buy an array of Corning Ware browning dishes as I’m pretty satisfied with the meals I can turn out in my microwave.  However, it was while I was reading a new book that created the inspiration to give it a try.  The book is called “Microwave Cooking for One” by Marie Smith.  Don’t let the title fool you, I found that it is very easy to multiply the ingredients to get a family sized meal.

Marie gives a great overview of all the products she uses in her kitchen to cook in her microwave and she referenced many times products made by Corning Ware to brown foods.  WHAT?! There are products made to help brown foods in the microwave?

I’m in Maven Heaven 🙂  I immediately informed my husband I must have said items and started my search.  However, I was disappointed that every item was discontinued.  🙁  But wait!  There is still one of my favorite places, the world’s largest online garage sale, eBay!  Let’s drool together over these beautiful vintage Corning Ware browning dishes I was able to score!

So the first picture of the box above and this dish here is the 10″ MW-17 Corning Ware Browning skillet.  I was able to get this barely used in original box with the instructions, SWEET!  Inside the instruction booklet were a few recipes as well as a coupon to send away for, get this you’ll love it………and entire library of microwave cookbooks!!!  I about fell over when I saw that.  I’ll have to start searching on Amazon for those books, I HAVE TO HAVE THEM!  You don’t think that if I send in that postcard the address is still valid do you?  Nah!

The recipes sound pretty interesting and worthy of a test.

  • Easy Hearty Breakfast
  • Cheese Omelet
  • Chicken Chinese Stir Fry
  • Shrimp with Pea Pods
  • Banana Treat
  • Potato Salad

Next up is a smaller browning dish.  I’m not completely sure of it’s name.  But I have a good shot of both the top and the bottom.  You can see that it’s got a small lip around the edge.  You need to have lips around the edges of your cookware because the juices do not evaporate in the microwave like they do on the stove or oven.  That is why you can get such a nice moist product if you cook it right.

On the bottom you’ll see a secret to the browning technology.  Corning Ware has developed this coating on the bottom of all the browning dishes that attract the microwaves and heats up the bottom of the plate.  This is what makes the food sizzle when you put it on the plate.  I’ve already tested this and it sure does sizzle alright but the best part is you can hold and touch the handles and they are cool to the touch.  The little feet raise the plate up off the floor of the microwave to allow the waves to go under and contact that special coating and cook your foods evenly.

Next up I have this Little Sizzler.  My first thought was of that old restaurant from when I was a kid called the Sizzler.  Remember that?  This plate is designed for searing and browning your steaks and pork chops or other large pieces of meat.  Same technology as above.  If you look, I was able to score this one in the box with the instructions too!  I hit the jackpot!CorningWare Little Sizzlert!  CorningWare Little Sizzler

I’ve already started cooking with these and I’ll be posting the results soon.  So far it performs  just like they said, it gets your food sizzling and I’m amazed at how quickly it browns the food.  I found out they have something called a pizza crisper and dishes that have raised grill plates on it.  I’d like to get my hands on those too.  For now I have some cookware to explore with, so I better get cooking!

All the Best!
